D&D 2024’s Player Handbook first impressions- A great upgrade, but a mere echo of the brave step forward it could’ve been

Dungeons & Dragons next pseudo-edition, which Wizards of the Coast has finally landed on calling the “D&D 2024 ruleset” instead of OneD&D, or D&DNext, or D&D Revenge of the Lich (I made that last one up) is finally here. Having sat down with it and zeroing in on all my points of interest like a bee to nectar, I can, on first contact, safely say that you will like it if you like D&D 5e.

If I were speaking to you instead of writing, you’d detect a lack of enthusiasm in my voice—or at the very least, some conflict. That’s because, for good or for ill, being a slightly better version of D&D 5e means that this new ruleset—as PC Gamer’s Robin Valentine successfully predicted, isn’t really giving us something new.

This is neither an inheren…

Dr Disrespect fired by the game studio he co-founded- ‘It is our duty to act with dignity on behalf of all individuals involved’

Midnight Society co-founder Guy Beahm, better known as the mustache-and-sunglasses streamer Dr Disrespect, says he’s going to “step away” from streaming, and from his position at the studio, following allegations that his lifetime ban from Twitch was imposed after he was discovered sexting a minor and attempting to arrange a meetup at TwitchCon.

Immediately after the conclusion of the stream, Midnight Society announced that “we are terminating our relationship with Guy Beahm immediately.”

Beahm delivered his message at the end of a livestream today, saying he’s “feeling a little fatigued,” and growing tired of being on social media.

“Over the years it’s been drained out of me, been drained out of my family and I,” Beahm said, noting that he’s been livestreaming since…

Helldivers 2 creative director argues games should ‘earn the right to monetize’, says its only pay-to-win item is a revolver that’ll get you gold in a ‘cool gun competition’-

Helldivers 2 has been suffering from success—a whirlwind launch that’s now PlayStation’s biggest PC success led to a swarm of server issues bugs, and not the kind you can shoot dead with a beam rifle.

Regardless, ambushed developer Arrowhead seems to be taking things in stride and, as PC Gamer’s own Fraser Brown notes: it’s already in better shape. From what I’ve seen and heard, Arrowhead owes its win to Helldivers 2 being a great bit of co-op shooter fun. Also (according to the game’s director and Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt) it aims to avoid the live-service pitfalls we’ve all come to loathe.

“We really applied ourselves to not make it p2w even though items are functionally different. The only item that’s p2w is the revolver—which will win you any ‘cool gun’ …

Id Software just surprise launched Doom + Doom 2, a ‘definitive’ bundle that adds cross-platform multiplayer and in-game mod support to every retro Doom-

Watch On

The original Doom and Doom 2 are back in a big way: Bethesda Softworks announced at QuakeCon today that newly-updated editions of the groundbreaking 1990s shooters, bundled with a pile of additional content, are now available in a single package.

Developed in partnership with Nightdive and id Software, the Doom + Doom 2 bundle features cross-platform deathmatch and co-op gameplay for up to 16 players, modding tools that enable modders to share their work directly in-game (sounds similar to the mod integration in Bethesda’s RPGs), and an updated soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult including brand-new Doom 2 recordings (although you can opt for the original soundtrack if you prefer). There’s also a range of new accessibility options including more legible fonts and a high-contras…

‘Segregating high skill players from the population at large, forcing long wait times on them, is a form of discrimination’- former Halo multiplayer lead on the ‘failure’ of SBMM in modern games-

If you ever want to toss a discourse grenade into a room and watch the sparks fly, bring up skill-based matchmaking. How much or little developers should factor player skill into who you’re permitted to play against in multiplayer games is an evergreen debate of our hobby, but it’s not everyday that an expert on the topic chimes in.

Responding to an opinion piece in PLAY Magazine about SBMM in FPSes (as shared by GamesRadar) on Twitter, former Bungie multiplayer lead Max Hoberman argues modern multiplayer games do a “disservice” to players by only serving them even matchups, citing his work on Halo 3 as how to do matchmaking right.

“Ranked filtered opponents based on level. This was for when you wanted a competitive match,” said Hoberman in a tweet thread. “But even then, I …

I’m finding it hard to resist buying these Star Wars-themed SSDs with light-up lightsabers on them-

Seagate has once again activated the part of my brain that makes me want to impulse buy anything Star Wars-related by releasing a limited edition SSD with swappable faceplates based on the lightsabers of Star Wars’ most famous laser sword-swingers.

Here’s the kicker, though. The lightsabers light up. Ugh, here’s my credit card. Well done, Seagate.

Seagate uses its Firecuda 530 NVMe SSD for the Lightsaber Collection Special Edition drives. Despite being a few years old, the Firecuda 530s offer good all-around performance: It’s a PCIe 4.0 drive with a read speed of 7,300 MB/s and a write speed of 6,900 MB/s.

Last year, Seagate sold Firecuda 530s resembling beskar ingots from The Mandalorian, which looked neat. However, this time around, the drives include a low-profile…

Here’s a puzzle game about a small dog with a very long stick-

Roberto is a dog. Roberto loves to carry around very long sticks, canes, poles, pipes, and other such extended, often cylindrical objects. This is Roberto’s calling in life.

Your job, in Stick to the Plan, is to help Roberto get his sticks from one point to another. It’s an adorably simple puzzle game from indie dev Dead Pixel Tales, and it focuses on funny new solutions to puzzles and weird twists rather than brain-burning difficulty. It’s what I’d call a relaxing puzzle game, one that delights you rather than frustrates you.

Stick to the Plan is about 70 levels long,  and comes with an environmental ambient soundtrack that sets the mood for a relaxing, wholesome puzzling experience. It also has accessibility options, like bright outlines for Roberto and the many, many…

I accidentally bred one of the rarest Palworld pals, but they have the most ridiculous stats-

Please say hello to my new favorite pal, who I’ve named Cake Boss Kitsun. This rare elemental fox has the dubious honor of being the most specialized pal, a total accident of great genetics and bad luck from my very first specially bred Palworld egg. Even though he’s tragically specialized, I did find a way easier breeding combo for this rare pal than the advice I’ve seen circulated so far.

After about a week playing, I finally tried my hand at Palworld breeding. The process is a bit time consuming, so I tried to stack the genetic deck as best as I could for my very first egg. After rifling through my Palbox for likely candidates, I decided to breed my lucky Gumoss with my alpha Sweepa, hoping to combine the work-boosting buff all Lucky Pals have with my Sweepa’s 50% work…

I’m annoyed with myself. Now I’ve got the Wordle answer staring at me, I honestly don’t know how I didn’t see it an entire row earlier than I did. I think I was too eager to completely rearrange the whole thing, instead of gently shuffling a couple of letters around. It’s all my own fault, although I wish it wasn’t.

13 of the best Cyber Monday gaming laptop deals that are still live-

Should you be in need of a gaming laptop this year, but somehow remain empty-lapped after the Black Friday bonanza, don’t fret. There are still plenty of gaming laptop deals to be had over Cyber Monday. That even includes gaming laptops with current-gen CPUs and GPUs. Sometimes both, if you’re lucky.

This Cyber Monday, you could see yourself bagging an RTX 40-series gaming machine with enough clout to break through into the Borderworld and drag Half Life 3 kicking and screaming into existence. Failing that, you could at the very least end up with a portable gaming machine that doesn’t look like Knight Rider or some squashed Gundam reject, but instead rocks the kind of sleek aesthetic even a Bond villain would be jealous of. Imagine finding a machine with more RAM than even a hundr…

Lian Li is suing Phanteks for alleged patent infringement on daisy-chained fans-

Lian Li is suing a rival PC component manufacturer, Phanteks, for patent infringement, claiming that its new fans infringe on one of its patents involving daisy-chaining technology for RGB fans.

Lian Li told the Dutch company (via OC3D) in May 2023 that its D30 series fans violated its intellectual property rights. Lian Li alleges that Phanteks ignored the warning and continued to market and sell the fans.

On September 8, Lian Li officially filed the lawsuit in the California Central District Court seeking a permanent injunction against Phanteks, which would halt the sales of the fans in question, and damages.

We saw a lot of this daisy chaining fan tech at Computex this year from companies like Corsair, where you can connect multiple RGB fans together and attac…

As an unrepentant tabletop obsessive, I reckon these are the 5 coolest board game deals in this year’s Prime Day sale-

It’s amazing how cheap it can be these days to amass a killer board game collection, if you strike when the deals are right. This year’s Prime Day has some real gems at impressively deep discounts, including some of the most interesting releases of recent years.

When it comes to board game deals, the focus is often on family and casual games, but there’s plenty on offer this year for more diehard hobbyists—whether you’re into crunchy dungeon crawls, strategic deckbuilding, or just love big boxes full of plastic minis. With that in mind, I’ve sought out a really wide spectrum of games this year, to bring you what I think are the five coolest deals available.

That was quick- Speedrunner beats Sons of the Forest in under 9 minutes-

In my first 9 minutes of Sons of the Forest I grabbed some gear, made a crappy tent, ate a poisonous berry, fell in love with Kelvin, and had the crap scared out of me by a shrieking cannibal.

Naturally some players are getting a lot more done in that same timeframe, particularly speedrunner Benjamin Romero. Sons of the Forest has been out for less than a week but Romero has already beaten the game in under 9 minutes. You can watch the current record-holding speedrun embedded above. It won’t take long.

Note: Spoilers for Sons of the Forest’s ending below.

It’s what’s categorized as an Any% Normal Glitched run, though it takes a while for those glitches to become apparent. In the video, at 2 minutes in, Romero has essen…

Ten years on, we’re getting a sequel to Reus-

2013 was the goldilocks period for indie gaming on PC, the point at which there was surging interest in games from outside the mainstream publishing sphere, but not so many indie games struggling for prominence that some became lost in the crowd. It was during this period that we got Reus, a 2D sort-of god game that let players assume control of giants so powerful they could reshape entire worlds. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t its biggest fan, but that didn’t matter one jot, as it went on to sell a million copies.

Reus’ developer, Abbey games, has made a bunch of interesting titles since, including Renowned Explorers and the more typical god game Godhood. Now, it’s teaming up with publisher Firesquid Games for a direct follow-up to Reus, ten years on since the original released…
